Welcome to the town of Marathon

The Gateway to European Civilization

The Municipality of Marathon is situated on the northeast coast of Attica, 42 km from Athens, on a total land surface of 405,000 acres............. Besides the town of Marathon and Marathon Beach, the municipality includes the areas of Ano Souli, Kaletzi and Kato Souli (Schinias)............ The Municipality of Marathon belongs administratively to the Prefecture of the East Attica region and borders on the Municipality of Agios Stefanos, the Community of Grammatiko and the Municipality of Nea Makri.....Marathon is blessed with a countryside that is rich and varied and land that is both fertile and productive. As well as beautiful and natural features, like the Oinoi Ravine, Marathon also embraces the scenic and artificial Marathon Lake with its elegant Dam.....Marathon encompasses the Schinias National Park , famous for its marine and bird life. It is also the site of a rare pine forest, one of few in the Mediterranean. The forest extends almost to the water's edge, and is only separated from it, by 12 kms of golden sandy beach, stretching around the historic Marathon Bay.....Marathon has a population of 14,000 permanent residents, but during the summer months the population increases to 30,000 due to the many holidaymakers that visit the area.....Finding your way to Marathon by public transport is straightforward. An Attica KTEL bus that serves the area can be found at the terminus in Pedion tou Areos in downtown Athens. Alternatively, you can reach it by car via Marathon Avenue and Attica Highway, via Dionysos Avenue and Pedelis Avenue, or via Lake Marathon and the Athens-Lamia National Road.....Besides its spellbinding natural beauty, Marathon has a rich history and culture.....Marathon is the only place to give its name to an Olympic event; the long-distance race, now known far and wide.....Marathon's landscape, its scenery and its natural resources make it a perfect place to pursue a range of leisure activities. An exploration of Marathon's heritage and culture make it an ideal point of contact for greater Attica and the history of the whole Greek World.....The most significant moments in Marathon's history came at the battle of 490 BC, when an Athenian army succeeded in averting Eastern despotism, thereby safeguarding both Greek and European civilization....
