The Municipality of Marathon is situated on the northeast coast of Attica, 42 km from Athens, on a total land surface of 405,000 acres............. Besides the town of Marathon and Marathon Beach, the municipality includes the areas of Ano Souli, Kaletzi and Kato Souli (Schinias)............ The Municipality of Marathon belongs administratively to the Prefecture of the East Attica region and borders on the Municipality of Agios Stefanos, the Community of Grammatiko and the Municipality of Nea Makri.....Marathon is blessed with a countryside that is rich and varied and land that is both fertile and productive. As well as beautiful and natural features, like the Oinoi Ravine, Marathon also embraces the scenic and artificial Marathon Lake with its elegant Dam.....Marathon encompasses the Schinias National Park , famous for its marine and bird life. It is also the site of a rare pine forest, one of few in the Mediterranean. An Attica KTEL bus that serves the area can be found at the terminus in Pedion tou Areos in downtown Athens.
